Radium is a rare radioactive element that was discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898. In the early 20th century when it was believed safe, radium was used for many medical purposes as well as for its luminescence, being painted on watch dials to make them visible in the dark. As the hazards of its high radioactivity were discovered, most uses were discontinued.
